Introduction to Marxan - Washington, DC

Jun 22,2015 - Jun 25,2015 Time: 9:00am - 5:00 pm
Introduction to Marxan - Technical Training and Marxan for Managers Workshop

A technical 3 day Introduction to Marxan course will be held on 22-24 June, followed by a 1 day Marxan for Managers workshop on 25 June 2015. Both events will be held from 9am-5pm at Conservation International in Arlington, Virginia. The training and workshop will provide participants with the basic knowledge and skills necessary to understand use and applications of Marxan from multiple angles.
Participants have the choice of attending the basic 2 day training on 22-23 June or the expanded 3 day training on 22-24 June with extra time to practice exercises, learn intermediate topics in Marxan analysis, and potentially get insight into individual data issues (depending on time available).
The following topics are covered in the 2 day Introduction to Marxan course: - Key concepts in systematic conservation planning - Creating planning units - Creating the essential Marxan input files - Parameter setting in Marxan - Understanding and using Marxan results - Zonae Cogito (front-end Marxan support software) - A brief introduction to Marxan with Zones Time will be split between lecture/discussion (~30%) and hands-on exercises (~70%). Prior experience with Arc or QGIS and MS Excel is prerequisite to this course.
The following additional topics will be covered in the Intermediate Marxan add-on day: - Reserve design considerations - Assessing and managing data - Addressing socio-economic “cost” components The third day of the course will be more flexible according to participant preference, but will still consist of lecture/discussion and hands-on exercises. Strong GIS skills are encouraged. Computers will be provided for the technical course.
The Marxan for Managers 1 day workshop provides decision-makers seeking to understand the non-technical side of this tool with a high-level background on marine and terrestrial systematic conservation and land/sea use planning, and will cover the questions of when, where, and why to use Marxan and other decision support tools. The interactive and discussion-based workshop will also cover: - Key approaches and tools to conservation and resource planning - Setting targets - Stakeholder considerations - Cost considerations - Planning with uncertainty Each workshop will be tailored to specific interests, mandates, and problems of the group. We will highlight and explain essential elements of successful planning processes, provide case studies of initiatives around the world, and lead a discussion on approaches and good practices and managerial-level experience for systematic conservation and land/water use planning. This workshop is not technical and will not involve computers.
Pricing: Registration is $625 for the 2 day course and $725 for all 3 days of technical training. Five student places are available at 40% off. Once the first five students have registered (first come, first served), five more student spaces will be available for 20% off the regular rate. Marxan for Managers costs $195 for people also registered in the technical course (or who have taken our technical course previously), and $245 as a standalone workshop. Group discounts are possible with three or more registrants for either event. Lunch and coffee breaks will be included with registration.

About Marxan: Marxan is the most widely used conservation and resource use planning tool globally. It can recommend a network of areas for protection and other spatial management regimes in marine, terrestrial, freshwater, and a combination of systems. Developed by Ian Ball and Hugh Possingham from the University of Queensland, Australia, Marxan supports spatial prioritization by producing objective, transparent, and repeatable results. The software can facilitate smart decision-making that accounts for a broad range of considerations, stakeholders, and tradeoffs in a spatially and economically efficient manner.
